Misc. Notes
Florence’s Death certificate indicates she was born in London. I’m not sure this is correct. I found a FHL IGI transcription that lists her place of Christening as Heath, Derby, England.
According to the 1910 Census: Florence and her 2 children were living in a rented house at 377 Fourth St. San Francisco, CA. Florence is listed as head of household. She listed her status as married and also indicated she had been married for 20 years. Her husband is not listed with the family nor can I find him on this census in California. No one in her little family unit is employed. Walter may be listed on a ship in another US harbor or may be in another country.
She had 5 children but only 2 were living. She and the children were born in England and had emmigrated in 1906. Her parents were also born in England. Both children attended school in the last year.
88She had already lost 3 children it appears she was separated from her husband and a little over a year later, she would lose her youngest son Victor as well.
The San Francisco City Directory gives the following listings for Walter H. Sr. from his first appearance to 1914 he wasn’t listed again until 1922 when he was also listed as Hollingum Bros.
1907: Hollingum F, steward, r. 154 3d Is this Florence? How odd!
1907: Hollingum Walter R, steward, r. 722 2d Av
1908: Hollingum Walter R, steward, r. 722 2d Av
1909: Hollingum Walter R, steward, r. 722 2d Av
1910: Hollingum Walter R, steward, r. 377 4th Av (Matches Florence’s address in Census)
1911: Hollingum Walter R, steward, r. 710 7th Av
1912: Hollingum Walter R, Steward, r 2681 McAllister
1913: No one listed this year
1914: Hollingum Walter, h 1215 Castro
It took along time to solicit the information (door to door) and set up the printing for the directory. It’s possible that Walter Hollingum wasn’t living in the home by the day of the Census on the 27th of April. He was a steward on ships and may have been at sea. It could also be that Florence and possibly Walter ‘fell apart’, figuratively and probably literally, after the death of their child Victor.
