This family probably originated in Gravesend or Milton by Gravesend, Kent, England. This is the only location ever mentioned in my searches for the origin of this surname. I have a separate data base of the Hollingums, l downloaded from the LDS IGI. I called it “Loose Hollingums.”
Many of the men in the Hollingum family were described as waterman in the 1881 Census of England. WATERMAN: A person who worked with or on boats usually on rivers.

E. William Hollingum appeared in Canada leaving decendents and I believe he is listed in the 1881 Census of the UK.

In 1999 Hollingums are listed in various locations in the phone directories of England and one, I believe, resides in the USA in Texas.

James V Hollingum (Wife: HR) born 5 Aug 1890. Unfortunately after the 1881 Census of England, I’ll have to get a copy of the 1901 Census. Died in San Francisco 17 Feb 1963. SS# 556-09-4752 issued in California before 1951.44&52 , Mother’s maiden name iis listed as “Best” in the CA Birth records index at Rootsweb.com.
Holly R Hollingum born Dec. 13, 1901 in California, Died San Francisco Oct. 1975. SS# 564-21-5082 issued in California in 197344&52
