The obit also states that he moved with his parents to Illinois when he was 14, settling in Shipman, Macoupin County, Illinois. This may explain why they show up on no 1850 census data, possibly being on the road at the time. The Dec 8 1836 birthdate fits in perfectly with the February 1836 marriage between James Williams and Jane Price, and leads me to yet more strongly believe that this is James M's parents. My working
hypothesis is that the James Williams who married Mary Darlington in about 1820, also married Jane Price in 1836. This would put his date of birth in the early to mid 1790s.
Also, there is a James M Williams who got 40 acres in a land grant in Macoupin County on October 26, 1850, although it appears to be between two and five miles east of Shipman, in the next township over. It lists this person as James McWilliams in another database, with a later land entry date. The actual description is the SW quarter of the NE quarter of section 8, range 8N, Twsp 8W; I do not at this point have a detailed map of the sections in the area, so am a little uncertain as to the exact location. I hope to investigate this lead in the not too terribly distant future by checking the land transfer titles.
