======================= Begining Toby’s Notes =======================
I believe all of these notes are from Toby Williams.

- 5'5" tall, with dark hair, dark complexion, and blue eyes, His brother, William, was an inch taller.

- James appears to have had several siblings, including an older brother named William, who was born in about 1828, and was married before 1862.

- James and his brother William were original members of Company H of the 97th Illinois infantry, which was mustered in September 1862 at Camp Butler in Sangamon County, Illinois. The unit saw moderately heavy casualties.

- James appears to have been invalided out to the veterans reserve corps in late 1864, suggesting disease, injury or wound at about this time. His brother mustered out as a corporal in July 1865 at Galveston.

From Family History Library Catalog?:
"The Veteran Reserve Corps was composed of deserving officers and enlisted men who were unfit for active field service because of wounds or disease contracted in the line of duty, but who were still capable of performing garrison duty. The Corps also included officers and enlisted men borne on the Army rolls who were absent from duty and in hospitals, in convalescent camps, or otherwise under the control of medical officers, but who were capable of serving as cooks, nurses, clerks, or orderlies at hospitals and as guards for hospitals or other public buildings. When the Corps was first authorized on April 28, 1863, it was known as the 'Invalid Corps.' Its name was changed to the Veteran Reserve Corps on March 18, 1864"--Introd.

- James also appears to have been a member of the Jersey County militia at the age of about 16 or 17.

- James' wife, Mary, continued to receive a pension until the time of her death in 1933 (some of my relatives remember her).

- James apparently bought a small piece of land from a family friend in 1863, although I wonder whether Mary didn't do this, because James should have been at the siege of Vicksburg at about that time. He sold it a couple of years later, and then disappears from the Jersey County records.

- James died of what appears to have been a heart attack, as did his son, and his grandson, my grandfather. My father and all of his four brothers have had heart attacks (maybe I should give up smoking). - He has a nice stone in the cemetary (from what I am told), but his wife has just a little marker.

- There were a number of odd property transfers for James late in his life, although I have not been able to determine the reason; his daughters also seem to have done some interesting property transfers in the late 1800s.

- We do have James Williams death certificate, but it is mute on many points.
