The other Henry is on page 146.

Census of 1870 indicates that Henry was born in Maryland. In the 1870 census NY was indicated as his birth place with “ditto marks” as it was for almost everyone on the page. One of his son’s also respond’s in the same Census that his father was born in Maryland. I have not been able to find the Shaphoff surname regardless of the various spellings in Maryland reference material, Census indices or on the Internet. Note refers to searches conducted Jan1999. His oldest son Henry indicated he was born in NY, aprox 1828.

From the City directories and the 1870 Census it appears that Henry’s son Charles never left home. Charles is listed in the 1880 City directory living with his parents and no wife was ever listed previously or on this census.

The last listing in the Brooklyn City directories for Henry Shaphoff Sr. is 1881-82 at 196 Manhattan.
