No Shipboard Romance
A Golden wedding Anniversary Party
The meeting betweenyoung Carl H. Hittenberger and a pretty German girl named Mari (sic) aboard a ship bound from Bremerhaven to New York back in 1907 was Pretty much of a flop as shipboard romances go.
If it had depended on that trip, in fact the Hittenberger wouldn’t be celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary today.
“We were friendly, but we were never lovey-dovey or anything,” Mrs. Hittenberger reminisced yesterday at the couple’s home at 3630 Webster street.
GOOD-BYE
When the ship reached New York, Hittenberger who had gone to Europe to learn more about the artificial limb business which his father had pioneered in the Bay Area, said good-bye and headed for Oakland, Marie went on to visit her sister in New York. And that, was apparently, was that.
But three years later, aboard another ship on another trip to New York, Marie ran across a mutual acquaintance who gave her Hittenberger’s address. She sent hin a picture postcard showing her and some other passengers on the deck of the ship.
POSTCARD
“And that’s what started the whole thing,” said Mrs. Hittenberger yesterday, displaying the 1910 postcard which she’d dug out of an old photo album.
They were married in Oakland on November 5, 1912. Until a few years ago, Mrs. Hittenberger, now 73, worked with her husband, who is 76, in the big surgical appliance firm which he still runs with the help of their son and daughter, Herman and Martha Hittemberger. They have 3 grandchildren.
The 50th anniversary of the marriage which almost didn’t happen will be celebrated by the family this evening at a dinner party at Vill Chartier in San Mateo.

According to Nadine Hittenberger, Carl suffered a stroke but I don't know if it was the cause of death.
San Francisco Chronicle, Monday, Feb. 9, 1970, page 34 - column 2:
Carl H. Hittenberger Dies at 83 (large print)
Carl H. Hittenberger, a craftsman of artificial brace design and owner of the C.H. Hittenberger surgical appliance company for 58 years, died yesterday at a local hospital. He was 83.
Mr. Hittenberger began training at age 12 for the business his father pioneered in the Bay Area by opening a store in Oakland in 1902.
GROWTH
Carl Hittenberger opened his own store in San Francisco in 1912 and it has since grown to five stores in the Bay Area, employing 150 persons.
Mr. Hittenberger enjoyed the outdoors and athletics. Through his supply of braces, he was once credited with getting 13 members of the Stanford football team through the season.
Mr Hittenberger himself was an angler. He won the national casting championship in 1939 and was past president of the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club. He also was a member of Crockett Lodge 139, F&AM.
SURVIVORS
He is survived by his wife, Marie, who lives at the family home at 3630 Webster street, his daughter, Martha Schluter; his son, Herman, now president of the company; two sisters, Emma Hennings of Oakland and Lena Eaton of Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
Private services will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) at Halsted and Company, 1123 Sutter street, with burial at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park.
(Note: I believe Carl’s son, Herman Carl, was the championship Angler due to a Chronicle article written August 31, 1941 about that event that gives Herman’s age as 24 which also leaves some doubt as to who had the affiliation with the F&AM. Perhaps they were both fishermen.)
