Hermann changed the family name to Hittenberger.
Herman and Sophie’s marriage is reported in the San Francisco News Call Bulletin in
1883Baby Adam’s death is reported in the San Francisco News Call Bulletin in 1884
They lived in Reno, NV for a few years. Emil ? and Carl (1886) were born there.
Emma was born in Oakland in 1888. and the family finally settled in for the duration.

Wednesday November 25, 1938
“Herman H. Hittenberger, 81 pioneer Oakland resident, who died Sunday will be buried at private rites at noon today at the Sunset View Mausoleum.
Hittenberger came to San Francisco in 1882 from Germany. He founded a surgical appliance business.
He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Hennings, 1445 Wellington Street. Others, surviving him are his widow, Sophie; two daughters, Mrs. Hilda Fones, Mrs. E. Hennings, both of Oakland, and a son, Carl, San Francisco.”

HITTENBERGER---In Oakland, November 22, 1936, H. H. beloved husband of Sophie Hittenberger, loving father of C. H. Hittenberger, Mrs, E. Hennings, Mrs Charles Eaton of Tucson, Arizona; Mrs. Robert Fomes (sic) and Herman G. Hittenberger and the late E. J. Hittenberger; a native of Germany (Santa Clara papers please copy)
Friends may call at the Fruitvale chapel of Clarance N. Cooper, 1580 Fruitvale Avenut, until 12 o’clock Wednesday. Private services at Sunset View Mausoleum, Wednesday.
According to the mortuary documents, Hermann died at East Oakland Hospital. According to his obiturary, he was staying with his daughter. Emma, in Oakland at the time. He died of Bronical Pneumonia and suffered from senile arterial sclerosis.
I believe this was awarded to Herman Carl Hittenberger but can’t be sure.
