Misc. Notes
According to the “Gene Pool” database left over from the human Genome project, Papa Doc’s name was actually John Henry.
On the 1850 Census, Henry was living alone at a Hotel in Louiville that housed about 200 people pretty good size for those days. He was already an MD (age 26) and worth $1000.
Hi, Bill. I received your mailing on the census of Jefferson Co. I
didn't realize that my grandparents had lived with my grandmother's
parents. Fanny, Sue, Henry, and James were all my great aunts and
uncles. Helen Stites was my aunt and first of nine children! I don't
think they lived with "Popa Doc" very long! "Popa Doc", as all the
children called him, lived outside of Louisville in St. Matthews. He
said Louisville was built on swamps and wasn't healthy; too many fevers!
Fanny, we all called her "Tattie" never married, Sue married Hugh Barret
and had no children, Henry, we all called him "Brother", never married
and in his later years when I was a child, lived with "Tattie". He
worked at a bank. James, "Uncle Jim" was a doctor like his Dad. The
Bet Pennington was a relative taken in by "Popa Doc". My mother said it
was the custom for the men to look after the women in the family and so
assorted cousins and relatives who had little money or poor health were
taken to "Ridgeway Corner" and looked after. "Ridgeway Corner" was the
name of his farm. It is now a subdivision, but the house is still
there on Chenoweth Lane.
