Hi, Bill. Dr. Henry Chenoweth was my great grandfather (His wife was
Helen Bullitt). S. R. chenoweth is Stephen Ross Chenoweth ,Dr. Henry's
father. Stephen Ross Chenoweth married Frances Stuckey, daughter of
Martin Stuckey and Frances Minnus of Jeffersontown, KY

I didn't know that Stephen Ross Chenoweth had been jailer of Jefferson
Co. In fact, i don't know anything about him! I'll call the Filson
Club in Louisville and ask for information on him.

Helen Bullitt chenoweth's parents were Mildred Ann Fry and William
Christian Bullitt, son of Alexander Scott Bullitt, the first Lt.Gov. of
Kentucky, who mrried Priscilla christian, daughter of William Christian
and Ann Henry, sister of Patrick. Alexander Scott bullitt came from
Virginia with a patent for 1,000 acres and he named his farm "Oxmoor".
The old house built in the 1780's is still standing. I visited Oxmoor
with my grandmother Stites when I was a yooung girl and didn't go back
until a few weeks ago when the Filson Club sponsored a garden party and
tour of the place. I took along my son, Bill, and his wife, Melissa, so
they could see their ancestral home. My third cousin, Thomas Walker
Bullitt, died several years ago and his ailing wife, now in her 80's,
is still living there.

I am looking forward to seeing the 1850 census. I'll let you know what
I find out about Stephen Ross chenoweth!

Nancy

Dear Ms. Forsyth:
Michael Veach referred your inquiry to me. I have been involved in a personal research project on antebellum African American history in Jefferson Co. and have come across several references to Stephen R. Cheonweth.
He was born in Berkely Co., VA (now WV) on 21 April 1796. He was the son of Absalom Chenoweth (born ca. 1757), and they moved to Jefferson Co., settling near Jeffersontown, in the early 1800's.
He evidently was with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. In 1822 Stephen was appointed a Constable and Tax Commissioner for Jefferson Co. In 1824 he became a Trustee for the
Town of Jeffersontown. He married Jane Miller on 28 December 1826 and in 1837 he was elected jailer of Jefferson Co. He held this position until 1851. He was active in the slave trade in Jefferson Co. with other persons from the Jeffersontown area ca. 1830-1848. He lived just west of Jeffersontown on the north side of Taylorsville Road. He died on 26 November 1857 and was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, where he has a sizeable monument. The Louisville Daily Courier published his obituary on 28 November 1857: "He was one of our boldest and best citizens, and his death will leave a void in the domestic circle, and in the community, not to be filled. He was one of the few survivors of the soldiers of the Battle of New Orleans". His widow died on 14 December 1890 and was buried in the same lot. We don't have this issue of the Louisville Daily Courier, but it is available on microfilm at the Louisville Free Public Library.
