Misc. Notes
James Breathitt Jr. was the son of an active Republican politician. James Breathitt Jr. was a Democrat who served as Lieutenant Governor under a Republican governor, Flem D. Sampson. Breathitt was a descendant of John Breathitt, Kentucky's 10th governor, and uncle of Edward T. (Ned) Breathitt, Kentucky's 51st governor.

James Breathitt, Jr. - (1890 - 1934) State/County of birth: KY/Christian. Party Affiliation: Democrat. Term Served: December 13, 1927 - December 8, 1931 Governor Sampson

James Breathitt, Jr., the oldest son of James and Olivia Breathitt, was like his father and grandfather, born in Hopkinsville, December 14, 1890. He inherited the brilliancy of his father, and was given the advantage of the best schools in Kentucky and, like his father, adopted the law as his profession. He was hardly settled in the practice of law when the World War began, and he at once volunteered in the naval aviation corps and was trained in the aviation field at Boston, Mass. His brother, John W. Breathitt, entered the same branch, and was commissioned a Lieutenant at Brooks Field, Texas, while his brother, Edward T., served on the U.S.S. Mongolia in the navy. Their father was too old to fight, but he did war work at home, and took part in the bond issues.

James Breathitt, Jr., followed his mother's side in politics, and became a Democrat with his first vote, and rapidly rose to a position of influence and leadership. A brilliant orator, with eloquence rarely equaled, he is in demand as a public speaker, and is everywhere looked upon as one of the ablest Democrats in Kentucky.

In 1927 he was nominated for Lieutenant-Governor and was elected, although the head of the ticket was defeated by fifty thousand majority. No young man, in Kentucky, ever made a more remarkable race. A presiding officer of the State Senate, he is looked upon as the leader of his party, and all eyes are turned upon him as the logical leader in the race for Governor in 1932, which will be the centennial of the year in which his family first supplied the state with a Governor. Lieutenant-Governor Breathitt was married in Frankfort, Ky., to Miss Natalie Martin, a daughter of Col. A. D. and Leo (Visscher) Martin. They have one son, James Breathitt III, who is a high school student.

James Breathitt, Jr.'s obituary appeared in the New York Times, October 30, 1934:
James Breathitt, Jr., State Senator from Christian and Hopkins Counties and a former
Lieutenant Governor, died at 1:30 o'clock this morning at his home here. He was 43 years
old.

The Thompson Book:
Senator Breathitt became ill after attending the burial in Frankfort of J. C. W. Beckham Jr. of Louisville a week ago. Pneumonia developed on Saturday. Senator Breathitt, whose first venture in politics resulted in his being elected Lieutenant Governor on the Democratic ticket, was the son of James Breathitt Sr., a Republican leader in Kentucky and a former State Attorney. Four of his children became Democrats and three Republicans.

James Breathitt Jr. was born in Christian County on Dec. 14, 1890. His family was one of the pioneer families of Kentucky. He was educated in the public schools at Hopkinsville and at Centre College. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1927 by a majority of 123 votes and succeeded in holding his office only after considerable litigation.
