Birth Place: Franklin Co, KY, US
Death Date: 1938 Age: 24
Cause of death: Plane Crash

Notes for James (Child 1)
James and Natalie's only child was James Breathitt, III, who was
born in Franklin County,

Kentucky. The following is his obituary from the (Hopkinsville)
Kentucky Daily New Era:

Funeral services for Lieutenant James Breathitt, III,
25-year-old army pilot and a

native of Hopkinsville, who was killed late Saturday when his
plane crashed near Glencove,

Ont., will be held at Washington Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock,
with burial in Arlington

national cemetery there.

Details of the crash were not made public by the army, but it
was understood here

Lieutenant Breathitt was killed while "flying blind" from
Washington to his station at

Selfridge Field near Detroit, Mich. Despite favorable
instrument reading and reports of fair weather from Buffalo, the
plane encountered bad weather and crashed into a tree. The
pilot was flying alone.

The pilot had flown from Selfridge Field to Washington to
transact business and to see his mother, Mrs. Natalie Martin
Breathitt, who is with the Federal Housing Administration. Mrs.
Breathitt was at the Washington airport to say good-bye when
Lieutenant Breathitt started the return trip to Selfridge Field
at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The flier had spent the previous weekend in Hopkinsville coming
here to get his wife, the former Edith Wadlington, who spent
part of the summer with her parents Mr. and Mrs. M. G.
Wadlington.

Lieutenant Breathitt, whose father was in the aviation service
during the World War, has advanced rapidly in the service in the
less than two years he had been flying. He was in line for
promotion to the rank of first lieutenant, although as late as
February of this year he was still in training in Texas.

Lieutenant Breathitt was born in Hopkinsville on Jan. 1, 1913,
and attended the public schools of this city. He later attended
Virginia Military Institute, was graduated from the University
of Michigan with bachelor of science degrees in aeronautical
engineering and engineering mathematics, and from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology with a master of science degree in
engineering.
