Peter was recorded as Peter Ulm at his Baptism and appears to have been named after his baptismal sponsor: Peter Sumi and wife Margretha [Mertz]. This seems to be the custom in this church.

Parents: Jacob Ulm & Maria Magdalena born Boeshaarin. The “in” is added to the end of a German surname name when it’s applied to a female. Peter Sumi and his family have records at Swatara.

[Notes from the Tree in Brüderbund WFT Vol. 4, Ed. 1, Tree #1058, Date of Import: Oct 25, 1998]
Peter changed the family name to Ullom He appears in the first census of the United States as taken in 1790. The enumeration was to be based upon residence as of the first Monday of August, 1790. He was living in Cumberland Twp., Greene Co. PA which was then still a part of Washington Co., Pa.

On September 19, 1793, Peter Ullom (spelled then Woollom) bought 98 acres of land from Captain James Hook's purchase of "Hook's Delight" (Washington County Deed Book 1-I,pp.765) Here he resided until his death.
------------------------------------------------------------------

His will was made January 29, 1816, and probated August 24, 1824. He gave his home farm to his widow, Margaret, after which it was to go to his six named sons. The indications are that Margaret died soon after her husband and on May 18, 1829, these sons sold out to Issac Ullom. (Greene County Will Book 1. pp. 257)

4. Hans Peter(2) SUMI, Jr. [P] (1.Peter, Sr.(1)) was born about 1713 in Alsace, (now France) or the Palatinate. Peter, Jr. died about 30 Aug 1787 at or near Lincolnton, Lincoln Co., NC. He married Margaret MERTZ.

Peter [Sumi] was a member of the German Reformed Church in Berks Co., PA from 1735 to 1755. He placed an ad in a Germantown (German) newspaper in 1761 which possibly means that he was selling the land he owned in Jackson Twp, Lebanon Co. and/or had not yet migrated to North Carolina. The first records of him in North Carolina are Land Grants in Tryon/Lincoln County in 1765. His will (1787) is on file in Lincoln Co., NC. New information, in 1994, indicates that they may have lived in Frederick Co., MD for a time before going on to Lincoln Co., NC.
