Note: Michael Pitzer appears as family "lawyer"
Penny’s note: Pitzer/Bitzer/Boshaar - are John’s mother. Maria Magdalina Böshaar’s family.
Jeannine Preston believes that John Ullom /Wollam was married to Mary Pritzer and were in Berkeley County Virginia/West Virginia. However subsequently Don Wood, a genealogist in Berkeley County stated he had found a record showing John Woolam, son of Jacob as married to Mary Weaver. There is a 1824 marraige between Andrew Ulm and a Mary Pitzer, with Michael Pitzer as suretor. Plan to pursue this.
The first record found so far for John Ullom in OH is a Deed Record showing the sale by George BONEBRAKE (German signature) of Darke County to John ULLOM of Preble Cty, OH of all SW1/4, (160 acres) Section 24, T10 (Harrison Township) for $230. on Sept 27, 1824. Witnessed by Isaac Stephens and Jacob Ullom. Recorded March 12, 1825. All of this land was originally deeded to George Bonbrake by President of US on April 18, 1819.
The Tax Record for 1826, shows ownership of a 155 acre property in Harrison Twp (SW) Darke County with a value of $141 by John Ullom, Sr. Darke Cty was first established in 1818. Land was initially sold by the Government for $2.00 per acre; later it was reduced at the initiative of Congressman/General Harrison to $1.25. Land was entered in quarter sections. New Madison was Fort Black during the indian battles in the War of 1812.
John Ullom, Sr appears to have followed his sons William and Jacob to Darke Cty, but Jacob and William are also recorded along with John for Personal Property on the Tax List; spelling varies Ullom, Ullem. In 1826 - Jacob 1 horse, 2 cows (worth $40 and $8 each respectively); John 1 horse, 1 cow; William 1horse, 3 cows. A John Ullem was married to Mary Draper on September 10, 1831; this may have been John, Jr. living with his father initially and not being initially listed as a head of household. In 1827 same land in Harrison Twp., but in Chattel John Sr. is specifically identified with 2 horses and 2 cows; Jacob 1 horse, 2 cows; William 1 horse, 2 cows and John, Jr with 2 horses, 2 cows. In 1828 List, Land and Known Owner Name again lists John, same description; but Chattel property lists a Daniel Ullom with 1 horse, 1 cow in addition to Chattel Property for William, John, Jacob and John - all spelled Ullom.
In the 1830 Census John Ulom, Sr. does not appear to have a wife, but although between 60 and 70 years of age, had a male <30, 2 females <30 and 2 young children <5 in his household. The Census also indicates that one of the members of the household was blind. William Ullom, John Ulom, Jr, and Jacob Ulom are listed on the same page
A Deed Record of August 25, 1832 shows the sale by John Ullom, Sr of Darke Cty to John Ullom, Jr of Darke Cty for $230; N1/2, SW1/4, S24, T10 (Butler or Harrison). Witnessed by Judson Jaqua and Jacob Ullom. Recorded March 12, 1833. On the same date S1/2, SW1/4 was deeded by John Ullom et al sen to Jacob Ullom. There are a number of other land transactions through 1899 in this section involving the subsequent disposition of this land by John Jr (1852 and 1853)and Jacob (1843).
John, Sr. does appear in the 1840 Census Index in Darke Cty; named spelled Uilman and at a location in Butler Township, (p 36) not immediately adjacent to William Ullum (p 23) and John Ullum (p 24) and Jacob Ulum (p 24) still in Harrison Twp.
On July 4, 1830 a Margaret Ullum/Ullam, born Aug 15, 1808, who also belonged to a pioneer family, married Solomon Harter, born Feb 3, 1808 in Virginia. Solomon is the son of Francis Harter who came to Darke Cty at an early day bringing 8 sons with him. Solomon was about 8 when they came, was reared in the wilderness and assisted in clearing and improving the farm. Margaret died in July 17, 1862; they had 5 children, only 2 are living - Elam in Butler Township and M. K. who lived on and farmed his father's place, his father living with him in 1880. It is probable that Margaret was the <30 female in John Sr's family in 1830, was a daughter and came with him from Virginia where they may have known Harters.
In the Common Pleas Court Records for Darke County on August 24, 1841; John Ullom, Jacob Ullom and Solomon Harter next of kin of John ULLEM deceased relinquish their right to adm. estate in favor of Judson Jaqua.
,
In the Index of Wills and Estates, there is a listing in Darke Cty for John Ullom E in 1845; also Daniel Ullom in Darke Cty E in 1844.
