came to Va., Elizabeth City County, before 1624 with his kinsmen, Peter and John Arundell, Capt. Thos. Willoughby, Peter Montague, John Calvert (bro. and heir of Dr. Geo. Calvort) Sandys, and Wriothesley kinsmen; who all had Land-Grants in Eliz. City Co., Va., around Matthew Howard's Grant, 1624-1643. As he was too young to own land in his own name, when he first came over, his first grant, recorded 1638, for "bringing over his wife Ann and two white servants", 150 acres in Eliz. City Co. (see Eliz. City Co., Va., Land Patents, Book I, and Nugents Grants in Va.). So at some time before this, he must have returned to England and married Ann (???), also, I, Edith Shipley Britton, have known, from my carliest childhood, that my gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. grand-father Matthew Howard's name was "Matthew Arundel-Howard", and that he was brother to Ann Arundel who m--??Cocil Calvert. This tradition has come down in the family of Anna Maria Howard (dau--of Samuel Howard and Jemima Elder) who m--Richard Ayres Shipley, my gr. grand parents. It has been handed down from father to son and father to dau. from the beginning of Va. and Md. and so was taught to me, as a small child, as well as all the Howard family traditions, both in America and the English traditions of the family. Matthew Howard's eldest ??on, Samuel Howard, who m--Catherine Warner (dau--of James, son of Col. Augustine Warner of Va.) is the direct Howard line to my gr. grand mother, Anna Maria Howard, and to me.
