III. John Crabb (Richard) merchant

m. 8/1675 Va., temperance Gerrard b. England, d. 2/4/1712 will pro. Westmoreland Co., dau. of Dr. Thomas Gerrard of Westmoreland Co., & Susanna Snow (see Gerrard). Temperance was the widow of Daniel Hutt( m.1699) merchant of London, d. 1674 of Westmoreland Co. Her 3rd m. c1692, Benj. Blanchflower d. 11/1/1701 will pro. Westmoreland Co. At the time of Temperance’s death in 1712, she was the widow of Benj. Blanchflower. Temperance’s 1st m. 1699 "Nomini," Daniel Hutt of Westmoreland Co. d. 1674 Westmoreland Co. Hutt was a sailing master and merchant and was convicted in 1659 of illegally trading with the Indians, and his bark, the Mayflower, was confiscated. Later Hutt was a master of vessels in the Barbados trade. Children- Ann, Thomas, Daniel, Frances, Eliz., Susannah & Gerard Hutt d. 1740.

John Harris wrote a will 9/20/1718, pro. 5/20/1719 & 9/12/1723 St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland Co., which named father Joseph Harris; uncle Wm. Harris of Hayne, Stowford, Devon Co., England; brother, Christopher Harris of Padstow, Cornwall, England; Xpher Harris; brother, Wm. Harris; sisters, Margaret Pergeny, and Jane Kitt, wife Hannah Harris; wit. Thomas Hobsen, Jarvas Elliston; pro. By relict Hannah Crabb, als Harris wife of Thomas Crabbe (Va. Mag. of Hist. V20 p294) (also more on Harris family on p294).
John Crabb of Somerset (prob. Gloucestershire), England, came to Cople Parish, Westmoreland Co. in c1673/5. Cople Parish was the eastern portion of the county. John’s marriage to widow Temperance Hutt gave him 1505A, 27 servants, and 100 head of cattle from the estate of Daniel Hutt, but since Hutt had not paid the dept on the property, John and Temperance were evicted from the land the following year, c1676 (Dorman).
The will of Benj. Blanchflower d. 11/1/1701 will pro. Westmoreland Co. left all of his estate, slaves, and Va. Lands to wife Temperance (Fothergill v5 p30).
The Westmoreland Co. will of Temperance Blanchflower (wife of John Crabb deceased 1691), dated 12/11/1711, pro. 2/4/1712, left feather bed, furniture, etc. to Ann Davis when 17 years of age and the residue of the estate to gr. Children of two sons Gerrard Hutt and Osmann Crabb (Fothergill v5 p48).
John Crabb was the appraiser for the estate of Thomas Butler whose will was pro. 7/28/1680, Westmoreland Co. The widow of Thomas Butler was Jane Berryman.
John Crabb was called a "prosperous Va. Merchant" (Md. Gen. Bul. V1 p491).
A John Crabb was transported to New Norfolk Co., Va., in 1635 or 1637 by Capt. Adam Thoroughgood (Greer). This may be a different John Crabb than the above.
Numerous court cases involving the estate of John Crabb and its division in three equal shares are in the Westmoreland co. court records from 1691-1694.
John Crabb derived most of his estate from his brother, Osman Crabb of Somerset, England, who died c1695. John’s sons Osman and Thomas have many desc. Who still live in Westmoreland Co. according to the Hist. Atlas of Westmoreland Co. In 1848 John e. R. Crabb, R. H. P. Crabb, and Edwin Hutt bought the old brick tavern at Montross so they could stay through the term of court. The book contained a plat of Daniel Hutt’s 6/5/1666, patent which he purchased from Wm. Overett 5/25/1662. Also the 6/23/1702, patent of Thomas Sorrell on Nomini Cr. Immigrant Daniel Hutt patented 875A on 6/5/1666, built a mill on Cos Cr., and was a Capt. of 75 men in the Westmoreland militia. The clerk of Westmoreland county from 1831-1850 was Wm. Hutt, from 1850-1887 was J. Warren Hutt, and from 1907-1912 was M. L. Hutt (Eaton p3,5,9,36,54,70).
