My grandfather, John Stites, practiced law in Louisville and did a lot
of work for the banks. He left law and became president of the
Lousiville Trust co. He was up in years when I was a little girl, but I
can remember when I was 5 or 6 years old, going with my grandmother to
pick him up late in the afternoon. He died when I was about 14.

By the way, my mother told me that her Stites grandparents in
Hopkinsville lived on a farm. They got their water from a cistern and
my great grandmother insisted that she wanted a well. So the drillers
came to drill a well and suddenly the rig disappeared in the ground! It
seems the farm was situated on top of an underground river! Mother used
to visit her granparents in Hopkinsville when she was a child.
