WILLIAM SHORT, IV, was the father of William SHORT, the United States Minister, of Spring Garden, Surrey County, Virginia. His will was probated 24th December, [p.447] 1782; m. at "Prestwould," Mecklenburg County, Virginia, 21st October, 1758, Elizabeth SKIPWITH, who d. 1771, dau. of Sir William and Elizabeth (SMITH) SKIPWITH. The SKIPWITHS were of royal descent, tracing from King Edward the Elder.

It would have been William Short V who married Elizabeth Skipwith, the daughter of Sir William Skipwith, and died in 1782. It would have been his gravestone that was standing when Mr. Bohannon visited the family graveyard at “Spring Garden”.
