Ptolemy - rulers of the Macedonian dynasty of EGYPT (323 B.C.-30 B.C.).
Ptolemy I, d. 284 B.C., a leading general of ALEXANDER THE GREAT, became one of the DIADOCHI. After Alexander's death he received Egypt, declared himself king (305 B.C.), and laid the basis for Ptolemaic administration. He sought to make ALEXANDRIA the cultural center of the Greek world, especially by founding its library.
