His son, Ptolemy II, c.308-246 B.C. (r.285-246), continued his father's work, completing the Pharos (see SEVEN WONDERS of THE WORLD). He encouraged the translation of the PENTATEUCH into the Greek Septuagint and had a canal built from the Nile to the Red Sea. Ptolemy ended the war with Syria and increased his prestige by siding with Rome in the first PUNIC WAR.
