Misc. Notes
(Manager of The Leaf Department For George W. Helme Tobacco Co.)
Edward Thompson Breathitt, Sr., like many in his family, was engaged in the tobacco business. Mary Josephine Wallace was born in Trigg County, where her father was a farmer and held the
office of sheriff as a Democrat.

Edward Thompson Breathitt, Sr.'s obituary from the (Hopkinsville) Kentucky New Era reads:

Services for Edward T. Breathitt, 72, the father of former Gov. Edward T. Breathitt Jr., were conducted this afternoon at Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home.

Mr. Breathitt died at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Jennie Stuart Hospital, where he had been a patient nearly three weeks.

The longtime tobacconist retired in 1963 as manager of the leaf department for George W. Helme Tobacco Co. at Lynchburg, Va. He had been associated with the company for 27 years as a buyer and
as factory and branch managers here before being transferred to Lynchburg in 1957.

Mr. Breathitt, born and reared in Hopkinsville, began his 44-year career in the tobacco industry shortly after World War I when he joined the former Tandy and Fairleigh Tobacco Co. here and later the Tennessee Tobacco Co.

Although from a politically prominent family, Mr. Breathitt never sought public office and made only one political speech in his lifetime-- at a Democratic hometown rally here in 1963 celebrating his son's election as governor.

Mr. Breathitt graduated in 1916 from Hopkinsville High School, where he was a star quarterback on the football team. After graduation, he was employed by the International Harvester Co. at Evansville before entering the U.S. Navy during World War I, assigned to convoy duty in the Atlantic.
