From History of Logan County - 1886, Mt Pulaski Township - page 797:
John G. Mayer, who was born Feb 25, 1809, in Wurtemburg. Comming to America in 1832, he spent four years in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and in 1836 married Elizab eth Work, born in that county, October 21 1812. Moving then to Springfield, he was employed in Lamb's Foundry, and later in Ridgley's bank as porter. At one time the brothers, George, John and Michael Mayer, each owned and ran a dray in Springfield. In 1846 John G. Mayer removed his family to a new farm in Mount Pulaski Township, where he lived until 1850. He then went into mercantile business with his brother George Mayer, continuing with him until 1859, when on account of failing health, he removed from the business and returned to the farm where he died April 1, 1866 after 9 years of almost constant battling with disease. His widow now resides in Mount Pulaski. There were seven children born to them -- Samuel, born October 22, 1837; Magdalena, born February 13, 1839; George, born May 16, 1840; Anna, born January 4, 1844; John W., born August 1, 1846; Jacob, born March 16 1850; and Henry, born June 18, 1854. Magdalena Mayer married Henry Fox and died at Dwight Illinois, October 10, 1879. The five now living are all in Mount Pulaski and vicinity.

From Biographical Record of Logan Co., IL - 1901 in an article on Jacob Mayer:
... a son of John G. and Elizabeth (Work) Mayer. The father was born in Wuerttemberg, Germany in 1808 and in 1832 crossed the broad Atlantic and first located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On comming west he located in Springfield, Illinois, where he was employed in a general way in the Ridgley Bank until 1948 when he removed to Logan County and settled on a farm in Mt Pulaski Township where he spent 2 years. In 1850 he took up his residence in Mt. Pulaski, where he was engaged in General Merchandising with his brother George under the firm name of Mayer Brothers for ten years. He then followed farming in Mt Pulaski township until his death which occured in 1865. He there owned two hundred and forty acres of rich and arable land and had three hundred and ten acres elsewhere. His wife who long survived him, passed away in March, 1895. She was born in Strasburg, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. They had a family of seven children, 5 sons and 2 daughters, namely: Samuel; Martha; George; Anna wife of E. Stoll who died September 27, 1901; John W.; Jacob; and Henry, deceased. (See the full text of the Biography under son, Jacob Mayer, in this file.

JOHN G. MAYER FAMILY

John G. Mayer (1809-1866) of Kirchberg, Wurttemberg migrated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1832. In 1836 he and Elizabeth Work (1812-1895), of Lancaster, were married and moved to Springfield, Illinois. In 1846, they moved to Mt. Pulaski community. They were the parents of seven children.

Samuel (born 1836), their first child, married (1862) Mary Watson Lee (1844- 1941) of Ohio, and became the parents of seven children: Martha Ann Elizabeth (1863-1941) who married Samuel Treft; Sarah Olive (1866-1871); George Albert (1867-1945) who married Estelle Webster (born 1865 - 1936) and had two children, Gavetta (born 1893) who never married, and Everett Warner (1900-1960) who married Esoeranzo Ramos of Puerto Rico; Ida Belle (1869-1976); Marv Cecelia (born 1870) who married Emmet Vining; Henry Lee (1872-1873); and Stella Laura (1872- 1953) who never married.

Magdalena (born 1839), second child of John G. and Elizabeth, married Henry Fox.

George (184l-1921), third child of John G. and Elizabeth, married first Katie (1850- 1870) and married second (1872) Cecilia Emelie Mattfeldt (1849-1912) of Michigan. Their first son, Edward Otto (1872-1949) and his wife, Minnie Laura Clark (1880-1961) were the parents of Norman Clark lborn 1904) who married Catherine Cryan (1906-1983) and of Robert Wallace (born 1909) who married Nella DeAttley (1911- 1984). George and Cecelia's second son, Henry John (1875-1946), married Ida P. Schaffenacker (1884-1952). Their daughter, Louise (born 1911). married Albert Awe (died 1985), and their daughter, Bernice (born 1915), married Phillip Homerin. Carl (1879-1881) died in infancy.

Anna C. (1844-1901), fourth child of John G. and Elizabeth, married Erhardt Stoll (1842-1926).

John W. (1846-1932), fifth child of John G. and Elizabeth, married Mary Elizabeth Mattfeldt (1842-1932) of Michigan, sister of George's wife, Cecelia Emelie. Their son, Oscar (1871-1951) and his wife, Edna Jane Buckles (1876-1937) were the parents of Alene (born 1898 - 1983) who married Harry Damerin (Born 1898 - 1984) of Mt. Pulaski and of Elizabeth Ann (born 1910)
who married Herbert Holz (1908-1960). John W. and Mary Elizabeth were also the parents of Herman (1870-1938) who married Myra St. John (1875-1965) of Clarence (1879-1960) who married Marjorie (1883-1953), and of James Frederick (I 873-1875) who died in infancy.

Jacob (born 1850), sixth child of John G. and Elizabeth, married (1872) to Mary Schick (born 1853). They were the parents of William Walter (born 1875 - 1902) and Elmer (born 1881).

Henry (1854-1884) seventh child of John G. and Elizabeth, never married.

Most of the Mayers were merchants. After farming four years, John G. joined his brother, George, in partnership as merchants in town. His son, George, after serving in the Union Army in the Civil War, plied the carpenter's trade. Edward, first as partner with his cousins, Herman and Oscar, and later as sole proprietor, conducted a large general merchandising business. Henry after serving in the navy in the Spanish-American War, operated a cigar manufacturing shop and later ran a hardware store. John W. operated a saddlery and harness shop in partnership with his brother, Jacob. John W. was elected mayor for the 1895-1897 term. Oscar was for many years chief of the Phoenix Fire Department. Norman made his career as economist of the Commonwealth Edison Company in Chicago. Clarence and Robert made' their careers as professors in Illinois Wesleyan University and the University of Illinois, respectively.
