Maria Umland (Granny):
Born 07 May 1851, her Mother’s maiden name Kreutter, Father’s last name Kreutter. She died 17 May 1942
Seeing this maiden name reminded me that when facing the mountain “square on”, the house at 1 o’clock was called Granny’s house and once in awhile, for some reason my grandmother refered to her as Granny Umland. It was slightly elevated on a short rise, I guess the hill had been cut back aways. There was a special road just for cement trucks behind her house. I remember Cement trucks going by from the Cement plant at the mouth of the canyon. The horses and donkeys were kept in a fenced area on the hill and I was taught to be very careful crossing the Cement truck road when going to visit them.

CHAPTER XXVIII - page 181
William Bingham, who resides on the old homestead in the San Juan Canyon, and who has enlarged his holdings by purchases, is one of the remaining settlers. He has a very fine orchard growing in the canyon. Mr. Bingham is a painter by trade, but dropped that calling for farming. He now has an orchard of which he may well be proud.
