Misc. Notes
Hello "Cousin" Bill,

Great to hear from you.  I have let a couple of my "other cousins" know that I heard from you and they are excited that I found your site.  We have all been trying to find some way to connect our John Broome with the one born in MD in 1749 for a long time but everyone keeps telling us that he died in 1779 a year after Betty died.

First I do have the copies of his Revolutionary War Pension papers.  It has it that he entered service in February 1777 and was there for three years.  This tells me that he did not die in 1779.

Some "hints" that I got from things my Dad said was he told me he was related to the Gantt family.  I thought he meant in Washington Co., Ohio where he was born but I could never find any connection. Many years later I found John Broome m. Betty Gantt and thought that was who he meant but she died in 1778.   In his pension papers it has his wife's name as Mary.   Which I had already found in the census of Washington Co.  I read as much about the Broome families but never found any mention of Mary but did find that everyone thought he died in 1779.  I had already traced the family back to 1810 in Ohio and found them with several children.  Peter, William, Thomas, Jemima, Ruth.

Another thing he said was that he lived near Ice Mountain in VA (now WV) I looked for census of that area and found him in Hampshire Co.,

One reason why I figured he was from MD was that Dad said that he went up to Boston from Maryland and observed (not as a participant) the Boston Tea Party.  That was in 1773, I believe.  So he lived in MD then and was abt. 24 years old.  I can not find any other John Broome in Maryland born in 1749.

Dad had also told me the story about three brothers coming from England and going to three different areas of the country to live and one went back to England where he died so I was sure that John Broome was the same John Broome that married Betty Gantt after I read about the three brothers.

I did not start doing my searching until after my father died.  He died young over 30 years ago.

Oh, by the way,  William Broome, a brother of my gg grandfather, Thomas, as I listed above married Persis Chapman, sister to Johnny "Appleseed" Chapman.

These are some of the things I remember right now.  However, if I think of something that I left out, I will let you know.

I guess I was in a hurry yesterday as we were going to our daughter's place for Thanksgiving.  She lives only 6 miles from us and has the only 2 grandchildren that we have.

A couple of things that I missed yesterday probably are the 2 most revealing evidences that I had so I should have remembered them.  The first is that Dad told us that there was a family named Duke that came to Ohio from Kentucky to meet the Broome family there to find out if they were a part of the same family. I found that John and Betty had a daughter that married a Dr. Alexander Duke and moved to Kentucky.  Dad said that they did determine that they were related.

Another item was that as I studied the Broome family in Ohio I found that there were 2 or three of the Broome's with the name of Wilson (as first name and as middle names) and I also found that there were some Broome's in MD that had the name of Wilson so I often wondered if that was just a coincidence until I found the above information about John and Betty's daughter.

So now I am really convinced I do not think I can really convince some of the Broome researchers who believe the genealogy books that say John Broome died in 1779.  So I guess I will just let them believe it because it isn't a part of their direct Broome line.

I know that you must have found the reference for John Broome in the book you mentioned because that is where I found it also and it made me wonder if it was the same John Broome or not untill I started to do a lot of checking info out.  I am not sure when Betty died but according to all records I found she died after her third child was born in 1778 is what I have found.  I also found John living in Hampshire Co. (WV or VA) by himself in one census; however, I have not found him in the census in MD but his oldest child, Nancy Ann,  was born in MD (Western part) in 1782/3.  If you remember in searching that lands in Western MD and Eastern WV were given to John's father however I don't recall the reason he received them.  I know that the John in Hampshire Co. is Dad's ancester because he told me that one of his grandfathers lived near Ice Mountain and that is in Hampshire Co.  Dad also said that the Duke family came to Washington Co. to visit the Broome family there and they decided that they were related, however, it is through John and Betty's child.  Now what I don't really know is when Betty did die.  Was she with John in Western MD, I don't know.  I do know that in 1810 John was in Washington Co., Ohio and his wife's name was Mary.  There were Thomas, William, Peter, Jemima, and Ruth with them at this time.  They were all married in Washington Co.   I also know that John Broome died in 1825, therefore, somewhere you have seen the information regarding John Broome, b. 1749 and d. 1825.  I honestly believe it is the same John Broome that had been married to Betty Gantt and that he later married a Mary Gantt whether it was Betty's sister or a cousin since Mary was a popular name for the Gantt family.

I realize that it is possible to make mistakes in genealogy and I consider that the writer's of the Colonial families of the United States did not investigate any further and just assumed that he died.  Also, I have tried to find where Betty and John were buried in MD and no one has any clue as to when, where or any information regarding either one of them.

I hope that this (along with what my Dad has told me) helps you to understand why I feel it is the same person.
