Birthbef 1150
Misc. Notes
from James Henkel:
The families often adopted the names of the castles or
baroncies. They sometimes adopted a wives name when
they inherited a baroncy through her. The Berkley
castle actually goes back to the time of Edward the
Confessor, when it was held by Earl Goodwin, father of
King Harold. Alice de Berkley was the daughter of the
3rd Roger de Berkley to hold the castle. The third
Roger was evicted by Henry of Anjou (Henry II) and the
castle was given to Robert FitzHarding, a wealthy
merchant. Robert's son Maurice was know as
"Make-peace" because of his marriage to Alice,
daughter of the third Roger de Berkley. He adopted the
Berkley surname which continues down to the present.
I'll send you a copy of the family history that
explains all of this from the Berkley Castle booklet.
