511. Kincaid – Is one of the oldest surnames in Scotland, and is from the Gaelic words ceann (head) and chend (hundred), head of or chieftain of a hundred men. The Kincaids were a Cadet House of the Argyle Campbells, and are Lairds of Kincaid, an ancient seat in Campsie parish, Sterlingshire, near the border of Dumbartonshire, where there is Kincaid House and a village of the name, grown up in latter years. The lairds have held Kincaid for more than six centuries. The late Laird, John Lennox Kincaid, was a brother-in-law of the present Duke of Argyle. The writer has been twice on the estate and met members of the clan. The Kentucky Kincaids are descended from a branch that immigrated to the north of Ireland about 1688, where after participating in the seige of Londonderry and the battle of the Boyne, came with the Campbells and Stuarts to this country, first stopping at Carlisle, Pa.; thence to Virginia and Kentucky. The first of the family in Kentucky came from Virginia in 1779 and settled near Danville, then Crowe’s station. Two sons of this settler had preceded him in Clarke’s expedition in 1776 and continued with that famous commander three or four years. A son-in-law of Capt. John Kincaid William Baird-laid out the county seat of Nelson and named it for his brother Richard, who remained in Kentucky a short time and returned to Pennsylvania. Capt. Joseph Kincaid. He served with Gen. George Rogers Clarke three years. C.
