Misc. Notes
From “History of John and Rachael Tannehill and their Descendants” by Letitia Tannehill Coe 1903

Melsar Tannehill, my grandfather, was born July 12, 1766 in Frederick county, Maryland and with his father’s family removed to Butler county, Pennsylvania in 1786 near what is now Harrisville. He was married to Eleanor Lisle March 23, 1790, at Pittsburgh. They resided in Butler county until 1805 when they removed to Jefferson county, Ohio, six miles from Steubenville. He took his family and goods to Pittsburgh in a wagon, then went down the Ohio River on a flat boat. While there my father received his only schooling, walking six miles to his uncle Thomas Coulter’s on Monday morning and back home on Saturday night, this when he was six years old.
In 1810 my grandfather and Uncle Thomas Coulter came to Richland County, now Ashland, and located land; Grandfather entered 400 acres. Later, they with their older son, came out and cleared some land and each built a cabin, and in the spring of 1811 they brought their families. In addition to the privations and hardships that are ordinarily incident to pioneer life, they were in very great danger from the Indians who committed depredations during the war of 1812; two families within the settlement who had incurred their ill will, having been murdered.
The following were the children of Melzar and Eleanor Lisle Tannehill:
1. Adamson, born Dec. 21, 1790 in Butler county, Pa. His early life was spent principally in Pittsburgh with his uncle Zachariah. About in 1812 he went to Kentucky; I think he was at Frankfort, where he expected to go into business. He was probably a silversmith; we have lost trace of him altogether.
2. Charles, born January 31, 1792, in Butler county, pa. He
was a volunteer soldier in the war of 1812. In 1814 he married Mary Oliver by whom he had the following children: Adamson, who married Elizabeth Gladdons; they had four children, Lodemia married Dr. N.N. Richards; Minerva married Mr. Post. Charles, who is a dentist, and J.C. Willington, a farmer. They all live in and near Hicksville, Defiance co., Ohio. 2. Allen Oliver married Susan Miller The family lives in Missouri, 3. Melzar died, left no children. 4. Elizabeth Eleanor married D.C. Quick; family lives in Johnson co,Mo.5. Lewis Kenny married Lodimia Gladden. One of two of his sons lives in Minneapolis, Minn. 6. Clark Lisle married Max Borwell; family live in and near Hebron, Porter co., Ind. 7. John Q. A. married Louisa Baker; lives at Amarillo, Potter co. Texas. I wish it would be possible for you to meet him some time. He is about 75 years old. 8. Charles Ormond married Sarah McNoull; lives at Cimarron, Okla. 9. Mary married Joseph Kutchcart; lives at Hebron Ind. 10. Sarah N. Married Dr. Cullem; lives at Sadalia, Mo.
Charles also had two sons who died in childhood; in all twelve children. Uncle Charles died at Mrs. Kitchcarts in 1875; brought to Perrysville, Ohio for interment.
3. Basil, born Oct. 3, 1795, married Isabel Young. He was a soldier of the war of 1812. Their children were Zachariah, Harvey, Lolitha; married Rev. S.N. Beggs, Rachel married Mr. Guiselman; William N.H. The family is scattered and I have known nothing of them for a good many years. Uncle Basil died at Jackson, Mich. In 1878.
4. Harvey Tannehill was born Aug 29,1795, married Emily Coulter. He went to Pope County, Illinois, last trace. He had one son, Cyrus who died at Cincinnati a number of years ago leaving a family.
5. Letitia was born January 16,1797 in Butler county, Pa. She married James Harvery Day about 1820. Her children were Matthais, Rachel, Adamson, Eldred G., David B. and Eleanor Elizabeth. They are now all dead and their descendants all live in the west.
6. Rachel, who died in infancy.
7. Melzer, my father, was born June 18, 1801. In Butler county, Pa. He came with his father’s family to Jefferson co., Ohio in 1805, and to this place, then Richland County, now Ashland County, in 1811.
