David Preston Brown M.D., 76, of Talent, OR. He was born to Edgar and Margaret (Wisner) Brown on May 16, 1928 in Walnut Creek, CA. David's only sibling was Barbara who preceded him in death.
David passed away at home on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004. Son of a farmer and a teacher, grandson to missionaries in China, his childhood was spent on a working farm in rural California. David spent many hours laboring on the farm bucking hay, driving teams of horses and caring for chickens to pay for his violin and music lessons.
David P. Brown was a gentleman doctor, a page of Americana. He was tall, gangly and strong, soft spoken, intelligent, humble and caring, living his life with integrity and grace. His life's pleasure was to serve those in need. He adored his wife and his family. A man of few words, but a wonderful listener. He was interested in everything and knew much about many things but, he wouldn't say much unless you asked. He was very patient and analytical. He distilled the complex into common language. He was liked by all who met him.
Dave accomplished more in one lifetime than most any three common men. He began college at U.C. Berkeley, finishing at Stanford Medical. He served his country as Captain in active duty in Korea as a medical doctor. He won a Gold Medal in the 1948 Olympics as a member of the US Crew Team. He sang baritone in Barbershop Quartet and played violin in the Doctors' Orchestra in San Francisco and the Rogue Valley Symphony. He practiced medicine in California, Zaire Africa, Happy Camp Indian Reservation and Immediate Care Medical Clinic in Southern Oregon. After retirement Dave gave full attention to his other interests of woodworking and gardening. If driving by "Old Barn Antiques" in Talent, Oregon you may have seen Dave tending to his beautiful flowers.
David is preceded in death by his son Chris Brown. David's survivors include his beloved wife of 32 years, Elizabeth. David's children are: Helen Bordon of Florida, Anne Conner of California, Margaret Husler of Idaho, Charlotte Szarmes of Hawaii, Russell Brown of California; and eight grandchildren. David's step-children are, Sam Jones, Pamela Dilley, Jill Forester-Giacomino all of California, Lisa Simpson, Leslie Hunter both of Oregon, Stephen Hunter of Oklahoma; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Christian Church of Ashland, 2nd and "B" Streets. Pastor Jim Larsen will be officiating. Should contributions be given, please send to the American Heart Association.
For all who knew and loved him, Dave is irreplaceable and will forever be in our hearts.
