The Gantt family claim descent from Gilbert de Gantt, son of Baldwin, Earl of Flanders, who accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066, and participated in the battle of Hastings. From this family came Rev. John Gantt, Rector of Dudley in 1530, by gift of Dudley, Earl of Northumberland. William Gantt, Gentleman, of Rowland Regis, Staffordshire, England, married, and his grandson, Roger Gantt of Rowley Regis, married Ann COBHAM, dau. of William COBHAM of Rowley, Co. Stafford, and Alice MAINWARING, his wife, dau. of Rowland MAINWARING of Chester.
